A&G BOULANGERIE, 2025, JPS GALLERY, HONG KONG
"If you're a baker, making bread, you're a baker. If you make the best bread in the world, you're not an artist, but if you bake the bread in the gallery, you're an artist. So the context makes the difference."
—Marina Abramovic
Visual artist Afa Annfa and food stylist Gloria Chung presented their first duo solo exhibition at JPS Gallery Hong Kong. Inspired by an iconic quote from conceptual and performance artist Marina Abramovic, this unique showcase explored the complex relationship between authentic and artificial food, examining their artistic significance and symbolic meanings. The exhibition, titled A&G Boulangerie, focused specifically on bread and butter—staple foods that hold profound cultural significance in our lives.
The exhibition space was divided into two distinct zones: a meaningful kitchen island in the main room and an altar area that added a sacred dimension to the everyday act of breaking bread. This dual arrangement fostered an engaging dialogue between the mundane and the divine… (More)
PEAS, 2023, JPS GALLERY PARIS, PARIS, FRANCE
Beyond explorations of the individual and the collective—aggregation and dispersion—my journey in Japan prompted deeper reflections on the meaning of human civilization. Standing amid the war relics in Hiroshima, I was profoundly moved by the artifacts and traces left behind. Humanity wages wars under various self-proclaimed banners of justice, yet fails to learn from the devastation and its enduring negative impacts; cruel history repeats itself relentlessly.
In this sense of disorientation, I turned to ceramic vases to express human contradictions and the fragility of civilization. As exquisite crafted objects, these vases symbolize the pinnacle of human wisdom and cultural achievement, yet their material is inherently delicate and breakable. Does “civilization” truly represent progress for humanity?…(More)
THE MAGICAL HOOP - YI TAI PROJECT, ART CENTRAL 2022, HKCEC, HONG KONG
Featured as one of the six large scale projects at Yi Tai, a key highlight of “The Magical Hoop” creates an imaginary scene where the continuous waiting at the laundromat vibrates with Hong Kong emigrants’ sense of longing and fatigue in a foreign land. The installation is a magical porthole that connects the street-front laundromat in Hong Kong to a living room in Britain. Under the pressure of high housing prices and unsettling social transformation, both the laundromat and the emigrant’s home embody Hongkongers’ longing for glimmers of hope and one day returning home…(More)
TIME TRAVEL, 2021, JPS GALLERY, BELOWGROUND, HONG KONG
Afa Annfa ’s practice explored the intersections of contemporary figurative painting, pop culture, and street art influences, challenging conventional boundaries while seeking personal expression and identity within the broader flow of art history.
In the collaborative exhibition “Time Travel” (逆時車站), presented by JPS Gallery in partnership with BELOWGROUND at Landmark, Afa joined forces with Chino Lam and street art legend Cope2 to celebrate the enduring impact of graffiti and its evolution into mainstream contemporary art. Drawing inspiration from the 1980s classic film Somewhere in Time, the installation recreated a nostalgic New York subway environment from the late 1980s—a pivotal era when Cope2 dominated the city’s trains and stations with bold, rebellious tags…(More)
QUESTERS AND THE TABLES, 2020, JPS GALLERY, HONG KONG
This exhibition was Afa Annfa' ‘s review and reflection on what happened at the beginning of 2020. That year was destined to be an unusual year. The new year started with a global standstill. For the first time ever, the whole world was shut down. We began to keep social distance with others, isolated and confined in our own bubbles. But even in the life of solitude, Questers never stopped exploring. They were still seeking adventures from the world and beyond, finding knowledge, truth and philosophy that eventually formed a connection that was beyond physical.
As a result, their Tables became the starting point of the journey. The place of gatherings and witness of our joys and sorrows became the temple of newfound knowledge where creativity and humanities flourished…(More)
AFA ANNFA: WONDER AS WANDER, 2019, K.UNDERWOOD GALLERY, TOKYO, JAPAN
Between 2019 and 2020, the artist witnessed her city undergo profound and tumultuous transformations. During this period, human facades were magnified infinitely: some revealed beauty and nobility; others exposed ugliness, grotesque and monstrous visages akin to demons.
Through silent observation and introspection, Afa Annfa transformed these faces into various chimerical spirits and goblins, depicting the disorientation, enchantment, and phantasmagoria born of greed and desire. (More)
